The ancient Muslim poet, jurist, and theologian, Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, may not have stumbled madly upon the very first rose back in 13th century Persia but he certainly immortalized it poignantly in his writing.

Roses are believed to have originated in ancient Persia but their cultivation quickly spread across the Northern Hemisphere, first from China to Europe and finally to North America. Rose enthusiasts throughout time and geography have helped to spread the cultivation and the adoration of this arrestingly lovely flowers to the point that, today, there are more than 20,000 varieties available.

Roses run the gamut of the color spectrum. They come in every color, including the elusive blue and black ones that have dogged rose breeders for ages. Every shade of every color is represented, too, with many rose blossoms sporting multiple colors or shades.

These enchanting plants have been bred to grow straight and tall or trail over slopes and fences. Some roses grow close to the ground while others become bushy. Many rosebushes bloom once in the spring or summer, others bloom again in the fall, and others still bloom from early spring until winter.

Diversity aside, a few rose gardening tips might improve your rose-growing success.

Planting is the first step to consider when compiling a list of rose gardening tips. Folklore tells us to plant flowering plants when the moon is in a waxing phase. Indeed all plants that produce their most desirable growth above ground are said to be best planted during the time the moon is growing into its biggest, most visible, phase.

(In turn, plant carrots, potatoes, and other plants where underground action is most desirable when the moon is waning, or becoming less visible.)

Trim your hair, visit your barber, or comb your dog the day before planting your roses. This, another of folklore rose gardening tips, ensures you have a bit of hair to mix in with the soil in which you plant your roses. Decomposing hair is said to provide excellent fertilizer for thriving roses.

Sunshine is one of the most important rose gardening tips. Make sure to plant your roses, always during their dormant phase, in a spot where they can get at lease six hours of full sun every day.

Rose gardening tips include trees, too. Keep your roses away from tree roots, especially deciduous trees, or they will divert the nutrients of the soil from your hungry roses

If you have even a passing interest in the topic of Roses In Your Landscape, then you should take a look at the following information. This enlightening article presents some of the latest news on the subject of Roses In Your Landscape.

Roses have many uses in the home garden, both as standalone bushes and climbers and as part of an overall landscape of plants and flowers. The newest thinking in landscape gardening is to combine roses with other types of native plants and flowers, and roses certainly lend themselves to a striking place in the garden.

Roses are also wonderful when used to enhance and highlight areas of the home or surrounding landscape. For instance, climbing roses can be trained to grow up and over a trellis or to highlight and enhance a bare wall or garden shed. In addition, a spray of yellow roses growing against a brick or stone home can be a beautiful addition to the landscape.

Landscaping with roses is one of the best ways to add beauty to the home, and even to enhance its value. Before you can landscape effectively with roses, however, it is important to determine just where roses will fit in your landscape, and how best to use them. Landscaping with roses is not difficult, but it is important to plan properly before the first rosebush goes into the ground.

Planning for next spring’s garden should begin the winter before the garden is to be planted. Planning early allows you to determine the best location for the roses in the garden, and to research the varieties that are most likely to thrive in your climate.

NOTE: If you base what you do on inaccurate information, you might be unpleasantly surprised by the consequences. Make sure you get the whole story about Roses In Your Landscape from informed sources.

It is also important to ask yourself what you want to get out of your roses. Roses can be used for many different reasons, from providing an attractive ground cover to providing a dramatic backdrop for a beautiful home.

Planning is also important in order to prevent rose specific problems. There are, for instance, a number of pests and diseases that are specific to roses, and it is important to take steps to prevent those problems before planting your roses. It is also important to ask yourself how much time you have to devote to growing roses, since some varieties are harder to grow than others. If your time is limited, it may be best to stick to hardier, easier to grow varieties.

It is also important to choose roses in colors that will best highlight your home and exterior landscape. For instance, a spray of white roses can be quite striking against a dark colored home, just as red roses can beautifully compliment a white exterior.

It is also important to examine your landscape and determine which roses will work best where. For example, hybrid musk roses grow well even in less than full sun, so they are often used in shady areas. It is important to note, however, that hybrid musk roses do not do as well in colder climates. It is important to take your own climate into account, as well as sun and shade considerations, when planning your rose landscape.

Now you can be a confident expert on Roses In Your Landscape. OK, maybe not an expert. But you should have something to bring to the table next time you join a discussion on Roses In Your Landscape.

Ever walked past someone’s garden and been so enraptured by the front yard that you hardly registered what the house looked like? In these days of the difficult-to-shift property market, that is the kind of garden you want.

Front yards that have appeal may draw a buyer into your home. If they like the way you have finished your yard - they may think that they will like the way you have finished your home.

At this time of the year a yard is more about evergreens and accessories than flowers, as there are very few blooms available. Also - and for this reason - it is at this time of year that the Japanese garden stands out. A Japanese garden can lend itself to almost any climate, from snowy to humid, from rainy to desert.

To get an idea of the look of a Japanese garden, first look in a few magazines or books at the library, or check out some illustrations on the Internet. Pick illustrations that look similar to the same size and shape as the layout of your garden. Depending on your preference you may wish to copy some layout plans or ideas.

Japanese gardens are traditionally ruled by Zen philosophy. Each feature has a deeper representation which you can ponder on, once you are aware of them. As you walk through your Japanese Zen area each day, you may even absorb some of the peace embedded in the Zen philosophy. These ideas for your own Japanese front yard will be discussed in two parts.

Firstly, in “Your Own Japanese Garden: Part 1″, the focus is on ambience, focal points, rocks and lanterns; then a follow up in “Your Own Japanese Garden: Part 2″ explores plants, water, bridges, vessels and aged items. These combined features help to form the Japanese Zen garden.

There are several factors of this look that can be touched on to create an unusual garden. In an abstract way, the qualities that the gardens are representing are peace and tranquility, and in Zen philosophy, this is created by simplicity.

The relaxing ambience that encourages meditation can be achieved by placing a bamboo or rattan chair plus a small table near a wall, or in front of a lattice fence. If your garden is in a hot part of the country, group the seats under a tree or parasol. Stillness is the key word here.

Two other abstract notions suggested in a Zen garden are represented physically by a focal point that is not placed centrally, and secondly, a ‘window’ to a hidden part in your garden.

This can be represented by a piece of tall, latticed fence work, or a tree with shrubs around, or a pagoda, or even simply a bench that is partly concealed. This ‘hide and reveal’ theme is suggestive of the quest for human enlightenment and it also offers privacy. You may wish to incorporate your seating here for that reason.

The introduction of something tall lends itself to the look of the Japanese garden. Western gardens tend to be larger and boast a flat expanse of lawn; Japanese homes usually have tiny gardens. They tend to be more vertical, and tall shrubs will often be placed to hide the house from the street.

For an inexpensive focal point, you can dig a bed and put a bamboo or a red Japanese maple (miniature or full size) plus other plants in it. The bamboo bushes and trees will live in most mild North American areas, though you may have to ‘cover it’ in severe frosts. A very large cactus or groupings of cacti will also make an interesting focal point.

Smaller beds can be dug in across the yard. The center of the yard is deliberately left empty, and a lack of symmetry is desired. This reflects the lack of perfection in the world!

For some authentic Japanese atmosphere, one tall and one shorter black lantern can be well placed along your winding (never straight!) pathway, or sometimes peeking out from amongst a selection of shrubs and plants.

A small pathway can lead to nowhere, and Zen gardens will always have at least one pathway of either white round gravel or gray flattened gravel wending its way through your shrubs; several glimpses of this pathway will satisfy the unity and harmony requirement of Zen gardens.

Whilst lanterns are more of a Buddhist tradition, they have come to represent the essence of the Japanese garden, so they are also included in Zen designs.

One very large Japanese lantern and one smaller one elsewhere can look effective. These usually come in two traditional styles, one more fat-bellied and squat than the other. They are most commonly found in black or pale gray.

Some of the most inexpensive modern lighting will lend itself to the Japanese mode. The ‘push-in’ mushroom type lamps are very easily assimilated into the Zen garden design.

Rocks and stone are a big feature of the Japanese garden, with different sized rocks grouped seemingly at random. Smaller rocks will look good grouped with your focal point, or added to a bush or plant grouping.

Try to find at least one big rock. If you have one big one, you can group smaller ones beside it and finish off with a fern or two. Stones represent life’s immovable mountains.

If that really resonates with you, beware; just one rock will suffice; you do not need a rock for each immovable mountain in your life! If you feel that you have numerous immovable mountains in your life, then move into “Your Own Japanese Garden: Part 2″ where the de-stressing values of water-sounds are discussed!

Gardens are one of the most important aspects of your home in terms of aesthetic value. The first thing that people see when they approach the house is the landscape and to make a great impression of your house, your garden should be vibrant. There is no better way of making a garden stunningly beautiful than adding brilliant colors amidst the green backdrop and this can be done by planting flowering shrubs.

What Are Flowering Shrubs?
The term flowering shrubs refers to a particular group of flowering foliage whose stems are woody and whose branches form an intricate network as opposed to the single-trunk structure of trees. Shrubs typically grow to about 10 to 20 feet, and can serve as great focal points for any garden with the stunning color of their flowers that could hover over a landscape.

What Flowering Shrubs Are For
Flowering shrubs are planted in home gardens for a variety of reasons. They make great garden borders when planted side-by-side or in between other types of plants. Other people plant them mainly for their aromatic flowers especially shrubs like purple leaf sandcherry, lilac and viburnum. Some homeowners plant shrubs to establish some privacy by shielding the home against prying eyes. Flowering shrubs can also help control noise with their rich leaves that absorb sound.
What Flowering Shrubs Need to Grow
Most popular flowering shrubs are not really difficult to grow and maintain. They are hardy plants and usually just need regular watering, some fertilizing and the occasional pruning. Shrubs may also be trained to follow certain directions of growth to define a certain look in the landscape. While shrubs may indeed grow practically on their own, you could expect more progress if you take more care of them.
What Flowering Shrubs Are Available
There are many popular flowering shrubs, each having their on characteristics that make them ideal for different kinds of situations. Here are some of them:
1. Viburnum Shrub – viburnums are among the easiest of flowering shrubs to grow and maintain. While there are over 150 species belonging to the viburnum genus, it is not commonly seen in home gardens. Most viburnums are found in arboretums and botanical gardens. Viburnums are very hardy plants, a lot of them are quite resistant to diseases and pets, making them quite self-sustaining.
2. Weigela Shrub – weigela shrubs are very popular in both home and public gardens. This deciduous plant grows with an upright weeping tendency. They can add a lot of color to any garden. The leaves themselves can become purple, dark green or even bright yellow. The flowers colors can range from milky white to bright ruby red. Weigela are also very attractive to butterflies, so if you like beautiful critters aside from beautiful blooms, this type of shrub may be right for you.
3. Forsythia Shrub – forsythias are another popular type of shrubs. This deciduous plant typically grows to about 8 to 12 feet with upright or arching branches. Forsythias are quite easy to grow as they do well with most types of soil, although they thrive best in rich loose soil, needing only the occasional pruning after flowering. This shrub produces vibrant yellow flowers during early spring.
4. Hydrangea Shrub – this is another popular kind of flowering shrub that can also come as trees or vines. Hydrangeas can produce different kinds of flower colors that can be modified by altering the pH level of the garden soil. Basic soils result into pink flowers, while acidic soils result into blue flowers. Hydrangeas that have white flowers usually do not get affected by the soil pH level, but are nevertheless attractive shrubs.
5. Lilac Shrub – lilac shrubs are among the most favorite home flowering shrubs. While the term lilac usually refers to purple with pinkish tinge, lilac flowers may come in a variety of hues including blue, red, pink, white, and of course, lilac. Lilac shrubs like sunny weather and soils that drain well. They attract butterflies and bees. This resilient plant needs only occasional pruning after flowering and some mulch as fertilizer.
Flowering shrubs are good additions to any landscape. They provide shade and color that can make any garden look vibrantly beautiful.

There are some simple “rules of the road” you need to keep in mind when you grow azaleas. They will need a specific type of soil prepared for them and it can be difficult to grow these plants if the conditions are not right. Under some circumstances, some gardeners may fail at getting the results they hope for, however, with a little time and effort, and if these plants are grown in the right environment, they will yield good results in the form of a cascade of blooms every year.

Some factors that you will need to be mindful of when planting azaleas include the acidity of the soil, drainage, watering and amount of sunlight.

Although requiring a more acidic soil, overdoing it may lead to “root burn”, so this is something you need to be aware of when planting the bushes in your yard. A good camellia and azalea fertilizer should normalize the soil, however it might be worth having the soil tested if you are concerned if it is going to be overly acidic.

These plants will add something to your garden all year round. In the season of spring, they will bloom into something very beautiful. The flowers that bloom during this time are very exotic in nature and will suddenly come into bloom, creating a real visual delight. In fact it can appear that the shrub is basically one huge bunch of flowers sitting in your garden with the flowers bursting out at the tip of the branches. During the rest of the year, the shrubs provide lush greenery in spots in your garden which can be difficult to fill otherwise.

These flowers are lovely scattered around your garden, as they have some unique characteristics in this Genus of plant. Being very hardy once they are established and in the right spot, no harm will come to these plants through any insects and any other factor. The only reason they would fail to survive is because of lack of good conditions such as the plants location or poor nutrition.

On the whole, however, there are very simple requirements to grow this plant.

That said, to get them to grow and flourish, you do need to ensure that you follow some strict rules to promote the growth and establishment of these plants. Apart from the soil needing to be more acid in nature, there needs to be a lot of moisture as well, to ensure the “pampering” they require in preparation for producing the huge display of blooms that they do produce. Paradoxically, there will have to be a good drainage too!

One of the great benefits of Azaleas is their ability to grow well and bloom strongly in the shade, and in fact they are one of the shrubs preferred by many gardeners specifically for this ability. Shady gardens can be a be challenge, especially if you are looking for plants that will flower in the bursts of color that is more typical of a sunny position. In fact azalea plants cannot be kept in strong sunlight as the blooms and leaves become easily burnt. They will need only filtered sunlight, which will provide more than enough to bring on the display we know and love so well.

All in all, azaleas are a great low maintenance choice for a well watered slightly acidic and shady part of your garden, where they will be able to provide you with blooms for for years to come.

The Victorian Language of Flowers

Did you know you can convey your sentiments to someone without ever saying a word? That is of course if they happen to speak the Language of Flowers. Everyone loves beautiful flowers and it appears since ancient times that they had special symbolism. In the book Song of Solomon in the Bible you will find the loved one calling herself a Rose of Sharon and the Lily of the Valley. Authors and poets often use flowers in their writings. The language of flowers became especially significant in the romantic Victorian era.

As I became interested in collecting and now selling vintage ladies handkerchiefs I found that you can tell a story or express a message to someone by giving them handkerchiefs with certain flowers embroidered or printed on them. Hankies are great gifts to send to far away friends in birthday, get well, or friendship cards. Hopefully this list will help you out in determining the meaning of certain flowers you will find on your ladies handkerchiefs. Enjoy!

If you’ve got a patio you need patio furniture. Simple as that. Patio furniture does wonders for your patio and for your whole house. There is a wide range of patio furniture available to suit every patio.

You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to selecting your furniture for your patio. But why would you bother spending you hard earned money buying patio furniture?A patio is an important part of your house. Notwithstanding that it is outdoors, it is still an important living space and needs to be considered along with all your other living spaces. A patio isn’t just a wide open outdoors area for your home, it is a place here you, your family and your friends all spend time in your house.A patio adds function to your home. It adds living space that is useful at certain times of the year and it gives you options when it comes to relaxing and spending time with your friends.

A patio isn’t used as much as your loungeroom, for example, but when it is it’s an integral and important part of your outdoor living lifestyle. And a patio without great patio furniture is like a swimming pool without water. Not much use. After all, what can you do on a beautiful summers day with a patio with no furniture? Stand around? It’s there for you to use.

Add a few beautiful patio chairs and you can spend hours out there in the sun reading. Too hot? Add a patio umbrella to your outdoor chairs and you’ve got a warm shady spot to relax in.Perhaps you’d like to do a little entertaining. Have a few friends around for a few hours to enjoy the beautiful weather together on the patio. After all, if it’s hot you don’t all want to go indoors do you?

So add some more functional furniture to your patio. Add a BBQ. A patio table to two to allow everyone to sit down to a great BBQ meal you’ve cooked for everyone. Perhaps some loungers so that people can relax. A coffee table so you can make some good coffee for your guests and they’ve got a small convenient table for their cups. There’s a stack of things you can do with a patio with the addition of some well chosen patio and outdoor furniture. Turn your outdoors into a living area and make it one of the most important living spaces in the house. Finding great patio furniture too expensive?

There are always places for the canny buyer to go online to find cheap patio furniture. If you buy offline in the regular stores you usually pay retail price, which is fine if you’re happy to take the convenience and pay retail. But for those looking for discount patio furniture you need to put in a little time online. You’ll find a wide range of choices when shopping online for cheap patio furniture. You’ll avoid the need to get in your car, you’ll have it delivered right to your door and you should find your patio furniture cheaper than you would down at the regular stores. So add some good quality patio furniture to your outdoor living and do something positive for your house and your lifestyle. And spend a moment or 2 online to find some outdoor patio furniture cheaper than you might otherwise pay, and pocket the difference.

Soil Testing
A soil engineer is someone who conducts soil testing and advises on preventive solutions for problems that may arise from expansive soil, saving the homeowner future difficulties.

A soil engineer can be contracted through the architect or builder, or you can contact the engineer directly. It’s important to make sure you hire a soil engineer who is registered and professionally licensed through the state.

What Is a Soil Engineer?
Soil engineers possess a thorough knowledge of soil-structure interaction. They investigate areas proposed for development, analyze site and subsurface conditions and make recommendations for septic systems, grading, earth support, drainage, foundation design, concrete slab on grade construction, and site remediation.

Soil engineers are often hired to perform soil testing on existing structures and sites and investigate any problems caused by the soil conditions, as well as identifying the specific cause and recommending the best repair or mitigation methods.

The most significant hazards are caused by earthquake activity, water, landslides, and compressible and expansive soils. Expansive soils cause millions of dollars in damage annually and many people have literally lost their homes due to extensive damage and the high costs of repair. Expansive soils will “swell” in volume when wetted and shrink when dried, often causing houses and other structures to heave, settle, and shift unevenly. Specific foundation systems have been devised to help counteract some of the problems inherent with expansive soils.

When Is Soil Testing Needed?
Soil testing, or a soil analysis, is usually required for building permits. During construction, the soil engineer may need to make further soil tests to make sure subsurface soil conditions are compatible with those observed in the initial investigation and modify the design recommendations as necessary. The soil engineer may also need to evaluate whether the construction is completed in compliance with the meaning and intent of the recommendations provided.

A soil analysis can be ordered by a home buyer or real estate agent to learn of any potential hazards that could affect their home and investment over both the short- and long-term.

For example, many home buyers are not prepared for all the complications of hillside living, including erosion, gullies, mudflows and/or landslides caused by intense winter rains. Soil testing and the resulting maintenance recommendations could help make potential or current homeowners aware of steps to help safeguard their homes.

Although there is no one set of “official” classification system of roses, there are many different popular rose classification schemes that are employed throughout the world. The most popular of the systems in use has been proposed by The American Rose Society in cooperation with the World Federation of Roses. Although this classification system is not the only one in use, a large majority of internationally established societies have adopted this scheme for classifying roses.

According to the American Rose Society, there are three main groupings of roses: the Species; Old Garden Roses; and Modern Roses. Species Roses, the origin of every other rose class, are commonly referred to as “wild roses.” These “wild roses” are easy to identify, as they normally have five petals, are once-blooming, and are generally thorny shrubs or climbers.

Several popular Species Roses include: Cherokee Roses, Dog Roses, Gallic Roses, French Roses, and Redleaf Roses. Species Roses can be found throughout the Northern Hemisphere, as they flourish in temperate climates.

Unlike Species Roses, which existed millions of years before man walked the earth, Old Garden Roses are identified as a major class of roses recognized before 1867.

Most Old Garden Roses bloom once per season, usually at the arrival of summer. Old Garden Roses occur in a variety of shrub and vine sizes. Although colors vary, Old Garden Roses are typically white or pastel in color. These “antique roses” are generally preferred for lawns and home gardening because they are easy to care for. Several groupings of roses are classified as Old Garden Roses including: China, Tea, Moss, Damask, Bourbon, Hybrid Perpetual and Noisette roses. Many “antique roses” have a strong sweet scent, which makes them very desirable.

Old Garden Roses are the predecessors of Modern Roses. Any rose which has been identified post 1867 is considered a Modern Rose. This group of roses are very popular. The Modern Rose is the result of cross breeding the hybrid tea with the polyanthus. The colors of a Modern Rose are lovely, rich and vibrant. Most of the roses found in this class flower repeatedly when cared for properly. Perhaps that is why horticulturists find this class so attractive. The most popular roses found in the class of Modern
Roses are the hybrid tea, floribunda, and grandiflora. Although Modern Roses are adored by florists and gardeners, they do not adapt well to colder environments.

After a rose has been classified according to the three main groupings, a rose can then be further classified by color, scent, growth habit, ancestry, date of introduction, blooming characteristics and size. It is very difficult for horticulturists to classify every rose, especially the hybrid roses which often seem like a grouping of their own. While there has been much debate on classifying roses, the American Rose Society appears to have the most functional system for these stages of classification. Perhaps this is why the American Rose Society’s classification system has been adopted by so many rosarians the world over
